15.1½ grey thoroughbred stallion, 1989
(Mr Jazz x Alana's Delight)
Jazz is owned by Lach MacKinnon in Australia and is available to New Zealand breeders via AI.
Lach acquired Jazz by good luck "and good luck it turned out to be," he says.
Several years ago the MacKinnons were looking for a colt, preferably with Star Kingdom blood. At about the same time Lach's parents gave him five old brood mares for his birthday, which were to become the base from which his current string descends from. "The mares turned up in Tasmania, from the mainland, on a very rickety old truck driven by an famous old Tasmanian horse 'trader'," says Lach.
"He commented on the quality of the mares and asked my father what stallion he would be using over them, to which my father, ever-weary of horse traders, declared he didn't have one but would be looking over the next six months. The response by the horse trader as you can imagine was 'I've got just the horse for you!'."
The horse was racing on the Sunday and he dropped him off for Dad to look at on the Tuesday. "The horse turned up full of feed and literally ready to run, and Dad took him out and moved a mob of cows and calves that afternoon with no hassles at all. Dad was sold and we purchased him, on the proviso that he was fertile."
Jazz has Star Kingdom three times through his blood and has now sired near on 30 foals all of which have gone on to do something, some of them have gone on to play high goal in the UK.
He is a very kind horse to be around, and one that is very easy to handle. He was a stock horse for the last 10 years but has "retired" to the mare's paddock full time now.
